Have you chosen a guardian for your minor child?

On Behalf of | May 27, 2025 | Estate Planning

If you have a minor child, it’s crucial to nominate a guardian in your will whom the court will consider appointing when you are unable to take care of your child. The party you choose should possess the qualities necessary for raising your child as you would have.

Below are five factors to consider when naming a guardian for your child:

1. Shared values

Pick someone who shares your values when it comes to discipline, education, religion, morals and other vital aspects related to your child’s upbringing. You don’t need to find someone who does everything as you do, but choose someone whose approach to crucial matters aligns with your beliefs.

2. Relationship with your child

Choosing a family member or friend with an existing bond with your child can be beneficial. Your child may benefit from the familiarity when needed to move to the new household.

3. Financial stability

Name a guardian who can comfortably handle your child’s immediate expenses before they can access funds in your estate plan or those unexpected ones that often arise when raising a child.

4. Age

While you may want to choose your parents, you need to consider if they will have the physical ability and overall well-being to keep up with your child’s needs when they become a teenager.

5. Location

Your child moving to a new city or school during such a difficult time can be challenging. However, location should not be a deal breaker. If a loved one with the qualities you are looking for is based in another neighborhood or city, you can still nominate them. You can then make provisions for helping your child transition smoothly, such as leaving a dedicated fund for therapy expenses.

These factors can help you choose a suitable guardian for your minor child. Learn more to increase the chances of the court appointing them.
